Custody (Jusqu’à la garde)

“Divorce is a sacred institution between a man and a woman who hate each other.”

[Lewis Black]

Telegraphed from the start, Custody wastes the fine performance of Denis Ménochet reminding the audience that the process of seeking a divorce is riddled with turmoil and that Xavier Legrand is a first time director.

Unlike the fantastic work of Andrey Zvyagintsev with Loveless about the breaking down process of a family dynamic and the consequences this bears on a child, Custody attempts to tell the story of a devolving process of a family dynamic where the father is clearly suffering from a bipolar disorder and the mother being forced to indulge this man’s court granted liberties of weekend visitation.

Ruthless no doubt, but unbearable in its banal commonalities with the realities of day-to-day life driven by a seeming commitment to take no chances with the formulation of authentic art. In the end, the audience can do little but infuse whatever sentiments of empathy they have to keep the film alive.

RATING: C

The 2019 #CannesFilmFestival market is gaining national attention this year because of a movie poster that features the decapitated head of #DonaldTrump. The film, a science-fiction B-movie homage entitled “When Women Rule the World,” is the directorial debut of writer-director-producer #SheldonSilverstein. The #poster features a woman holding Trump’s head, complete with the president’s trademark red Make America Great Again hat.⁣⁣ ⁣ (h/t to @cinemafromthepast for the Hitchcock inspiration shot) ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 📑 | SOURCE: ⁣⁣⁣@Indiewire⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ #film #films #movie #movies #cinema #hollywood #entertainment #celebrity #celebrities #cinephile #filmnews #drama #action #horror #filmcritic #newhollywood #indies #indiefilms #studio #boxoffice #pop #popstar #entertainment #death #cannes #feminism #MAGA
FIRST REVIEWS: To return to Peter Bradshaw for a moment, it seems to him that the “nature of Franz’s intensity” is “not all that different from the intensity of Ryan Gosling’s thoughtful singer-songwriter in Malick’s Song to Song (2017), or Christian Bale’s tortured screenwriter in Knight of Cups (2015), or Ben Affleck’s engineer in To the Wonder (2014), whose woes are considerably less pressing . . . It is as if Malick has taken Jägerstätter and enclosed him in exactly that same hermetically sealed environment of heightened awareness of the present moment, and unawareness of the larger context.”⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ 📑 | SOURCE: ⁣⁣⁣@CriterionCollection⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ #film #films #movie #movies #cinema #hollywood #entertainment #celebrity #celebrities #cinephile #filmnews #drama #action #horror #filmcritic #oldhollywood #newhollywood #indies #indiefilms #studio #boxoffice #pop #popstar #entertainment #filmhistory #terrencemalick #cannesfilmfestival
